What is remembered about Ochendo Joseph Chinawa Ngwudike Ozougwu?

Ochendo Joseph Ozougwu lived a life defined by faith, perseverance, and profound devotion to family and community. Having lived to celebrate 75 years of life and 45 years of marriage, God in His abundant grace granted him an additional six years. In January of this year, he and his beloved wife, Nneife Modester Obiageri Ozougwu, were blessed to celebrate their Golden Jubilee—50 years of holy matrimony. Though he faced illness over his final years, he fought with remarkable strength, resilience, and grace. He lived to the age of 82, making him the longest-surviving elder in his known lineage. He passed into eternal rest surrounded by the warmth, love, and support of his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and loved ones. Having lived to see his children and his children’s children, he was carried in his final days by the very love and devotion he so generously poured out during his lifetime. FAMILY BACKGROUND Ochendo came into this world on August 8th, 1944, into the polygamous family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ozoani Ozougwu (Amu n’eche Obodo). He was the second of five surviving children of the fifth wife (Susanna) of his hardworking father—a farmer and herdsman in Uwani Uboji Ngwo-Uno, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND Born into an African Traditional Religion (A.T.R) household, Ochendo began his educational journey where he came into contact with the Irish priest Rev. Fr. Dohathy at Eke. He was baptized as an adult and became a communicant in 1957. From that moment onward, he dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity. He played an active and effective role in both church and community affairs, and in the year 2000, he became a bona fide member, patron, and promoter of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Pious Association. EDUCATION AND CAREER Ochendo began his intellectual pursuit at St. Mary’s Parish Ngwo in 1956, obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1961. In 1964, he moved to Aba (Abia State) to work with the Ministry of Works. After obtaining his O-level qualifications, he combined work with further studies at Government Technical College Enugu (G.T.C) to earn his Advance Course Diploma (ACD). He went on to achieve the certificate of "Final City and Guilds Institution London," which elevated him to Grade Level 12 in the Water Corporation—the automatic equivalent of a Principal Water Engineer. MARRIED LIFE & FAMILY LEGACY Upon his return from the Nigeria-Biafra War, Ochendo was betrothed and wedded to Modester in April 1974. Together, they were blessed with seven children (losing one at birth), who went on to build fulfilling careers as lawyers, priests, scholars, accountants, engineers, and nurses. In his later years, his happiness was multiplied through his grandchildren. His surviving children include: ● Stanislaus (Barrister and Solicitor of the Federal Supreme Court of Nigeria) ● Leonard (Priest of Enugu Diocese and Doctor, Schwertberg Austria) ● Immaculata (Professor, Girls Secondary School Ngwo-Uno, Graduate of UNN) ● Theresa (Accountant Aqua Rapha, Graduate of ESUT) ● Cornelius (Engineer, Mechanical Production, Graduate of ESUT) ● Josephine (Nurse, Controller Council of Nigeria Nursery and Midwifery, Graduate of EBSU) AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS ● Title of Ochendo: Honored twice with the title of Ochendo by the Parish and the CWO St. Joseph’s Parish Oluama Uboji Ngwo for his active church service. ● Labour Union Leader: Awarded the chairmanship of the Worker’s Union in 1998 prior to his retirement in 1999, earning him the title of “The Honourable.” ● Church Building Pioneer: Became a pioneer member of the Parish Council in 2009 under Rev. He managed funds so effectively that the church building was completed within a single year—a feat celebrated across the Enugu Diocese. ● Patron: Honored as Patron and Promoter of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Pious Society at St. Joseph’s Parish Uboji Ngwo. VIRTUES & PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE Ochendo was an apostle of prayer, a pioneer member of the St. Joseph’s Charity Group, and a renowned seeker of truth.
